Trumbull’s administration building air quality may be making employees sick

By RAYMOND L. SMITH 2 min read

WARREN -- A county employee told Trumbull County Commissioners that the air quality in the county's administration building may be making employees sick.

Beth Toth of the Trumbull County Auditor's Office told the commissioners during Tuesday's workshop there are some concerns about the air quality in the auditor's office.

She provided commissioners Tony Bernard, Rick Hernandez and Denny Malloy with results of air quality tests that she, on her own, conducted that indicated there had been formaldehyde readings in the air.

"Everybody is constantly sick in our offices with sinus infections," she said. "We have people who are sick all of the time."

Toth showed the commissioners photographs of some ceiling tiles located in the county's Information Technology department that she described looking like cottage cheese.

Trumbull County Facilities Director Darryl Dunigan told the commissioners he had been made aware of the employee's concerns.

He noted his office has been working to make adjustments, including checking air vents, placing air filters in them and changing ceiling tiles.

Dunigan also noted they looked to determine if there has been water leaking into the offices.

"We cannot find any intrusions," he said.

Each of the commissioners noted they were unaware of the air quality concerns expressed by Toth prior to Tuesday's workshop meeting.

However, they agreed there should be professional air quality testing done in the auditor's offices at a minimum and, perhaps, throughout the building.

Commissioner Tony Bernard said they likely will get a professional company to test the air quality of the building..

"I believe we should test the whole building," Bernard said.

Malloy added they plan to get the testing done as soon as possible, so they can determine what should be done.

"The health and safety of our employees is always a concern," Malloy said.
