Police find vehicle in Austintown hit-skip

By DAN POMPILI 2 min read

AUSTINTOWN -- Township police have located a vehicle involved in a hit and run that left a man seriously injured Monday night.

The crash occurred around 8 p.m. on Burkey Road near Western Place, and left a man in critical condition. Police have not disclosed the man's identity or the exact nature of his injuries.

Lt. Jeff Churilla of the Austintown Police Department said the man was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital that night. Churilla said nearby residents saw the man lying in the road and called 911, although they did not see the vehicle hit him.

Churilla said an auto part found at the scene gave them the lead they needed.

"We were able to narrow it down to a year, make and model range," he said. “The DMV has helped us with past hit and runs, and they were able to give us a few addresses that matched that vehicle and we found it at the first address we went to."

Churilla said the vehicle was found on the west side of Youngstown. He said he can't yet disclose what type of vehicle it is, but the initial incident report will be available by Friday.

A news release issued Tuesday from APD said police believed they were seeking a dark gray SUV, with damage to its right front, side, and possibly right side tires and rims.

Churilla said his department has identified a suspect but there is still work to do before an arrest can be made.

"There's still a lot more to go on, we need to confirm who the driver was," he said. "Still quite a few steps to go through before I present charges."
