SOCIETY TO MEET: The Mahoning County Chapter of Ohio Genealogical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday at St. Charles Church, 7345 Westview Drive. The topic is "Where do you look for your ancestors?" Speaker is Mike Heyer, longtime member of the chapter, who will present an overview of several genealogical platforms. He will discuss how to use different platforms such as Ancestry.com and FundMyPast.

ALTRUSA EVENT: The Altrusa Club of Youngstown's 14th annual Shoppopalooza will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at Avion on the Water, 2177 W. Western Reserve Road, Canfield. The club has been championing projects dedicated to making the local communities better and uses the fundraiser to help benefit community literacy programs, scholarship funds and volunteer initiatives. There will be a buffet dinner, bag raffle and vendor sale. Cost is $45. For reservations, call Barb at 330-314-3294,

FALL RUMAGE SALE: The Austintown Redeemer Lutheran Church's Ladies in Service will have a fall rummage sale 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the church, 2305 S. Canfield Niles Road, to benefit Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley. There will be a variety of items available.

HELPING HANDS: The Helping Hands Closet at Western Reserve United Methodist Church, 4580 Canfield Road, will have new and gently used clothing for the entire family. The closet is located at the back of the church and is open 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each Tuesday.

JAZZ CONCERT: St. John's Episcopal Church, 323 Wick Ave., Youngstown, will have a jazz concert at 7 p.m. Friday. The church was selected as the site for the concert for Ohio Non-Violence Week and will feature various musical artists. The concert is sponsored by Jack Cessna, founder of the Youngstown Peace Race.

BOOK SALE: Westminster Presbyterian Church, 119 Stadium Drive, Boardman, will have its 70th annual book sale 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday to Friday. There will be hardback and paperback books, as well as music CDs, books on CDS and puzzles. All paperbacks will be 25 cents on Thursday. All books will be half price until 4 p.m. Friday and between 4 and 7 p.m. Friday, all books will be $1 per bag. Proceeds benefit the church's mission outreach.

CHILI COOKOFF: WKBN'S Pete Gabriel started the Chilli Challenge 19 years ago with the Boardman Optimist Club. This year, the Boardman Optimist Annual Political Chili Cook-off is at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Avion On The Water, 2177 W. Western Reserve Road, Canfield. There will be a basket raffle and 50/50 raffle. Guests can sample different chili entries and fill out a ballot. The cost is $10, and children under 10 get in free. The chefs will be Mahoning County Commissioners Anthony Traficanti, Geno DiFabio and Carol Remedio-Righetti, Congressman Michael Rulli, deputy recorder Noralynn Palermo, Mahoning County Auditor Ralph Meacham, State Rep. Tex Fischer, judicial candidate Mark DeVecchio, Mahoning County Democratic Party Chairman Chris Anderson, Mahoning County Recorder Richard Scarsella, former Austintown trustee Robert Santos, Mahoning County Engineer Pat Ginetti, and trustees from Austintown and Boardman.
