The Vindicator on Tuesday ran an article about the passing of former Mahoning County Sheriff and Youngstown Police Chief Randall Wellington. The article incorrectly stated that Wellington was appointed to fill the unfinished term of Sheriff Phil Chance following Chance’s conviction on racketeering charges. The story omitted the interim tenure of James M. Lewandowski, who was appointed interim sheriff on July 14, 1998. Wellington was appointed sheriff on Aug. 28, 1998, by Democratic precinct committee members to complete the remainder of the term. The Vindicator regrets the error.
