Canfield BOE asking voters to support 5.9-mill operating levy

CANFIELD – The Canfield Local School District will have a 5.9-mill current expense levy on the Nov. 3 ballot.

The levy, if passed, will collect $5,715,791 per year for five years and will cost homeowners $207 per year for every $100,000 of property valuation.

While the levy is mainly for personnel and programs, it can be used for facility maintenance, according to Canfield Superintendent Joe Knoll.

"Operating dollars can be used for maintenance of our facilities, but not for new buildings," he said.

The 5.9 mills is a sizeable sum, but was carefully thought out by the district.

"The district began with its financial projections and identified the amount of additional recurring revenue necessary to address the gap between ongoing revenues and the cost of maintaining current operations," Knoll said. "Once the district determined the approximate amount of additional revenue needed, that amount was translated into a millage rate based on Canfield Local School District’s taxable property valuation. The result is the proposed 5.9-mill operating levy, which is expected to generate approximately $5.7 million annually."

Canfield’s last new operating levy was passed in 2013. It was for 5.9 mills and brought in $3,247,378 annually for five years. It now collects at approximately 3.65 mills. Knoll said that operating levy will be up for renewal in November next year, but for this year, the focus is on new money needed to maintain the staff and programs the district now has in place.
