Burglar looking for love in Boardman blames AI

By DAN POMPILI 2 min read

BOARDMAN -- There are no hard feelings after a man found a stranger in his home early Tuesday morning.

The resident of the Chester Drive apartment told police he won't press charges and the man was let off with a trespass warning. The intruder told police he was looking for a prostitute and that Google AI had given him bad advice.

The Boardman Police report states that officers pulled the intruder's vehicle over after responding to a burglary in progress call around 5 a.m.

The resident told officers he was awakened by footsteps in his apartment and turned over in bed to find the intruder standing at his bedroom door. The report states the resident yelled at him and asked what he was doing in the apartment. The intruder allegedly said "sorry, dog" before leaving the apartment.

The report states police located the intruder's black 2020 Chevrolet Equinox on Hillman Way near Overhill Drive and pulled him over. The report states the resident gave dispatch a general description of the car when he watched the man flee the property. Police ordered the intruder from the vehicle at gunpoint and detained him in handcuffs.

The intruder told police he had been at the apartment looking for prostitutes. He said he dropped a friend off after work then asked Google AI why lights were on in houses at the intersection of Overhill Drive and Oak Knoll Drive. He said Google told him it meant there were prostitutes available at the house.

He told police he entered through an unlocked front door. Police released McIntyre after the resident declined to pursue charges.

Officers issued him a criminal trespass warning barring him from the apartment beginning Tuesday.

A similar Google search conducted by staff at The Vindicator on Wednesday generated results stating that the lights were on for enhanced visibility and safety in the neighborhood. The results also mention the Chester Drive incident as reported by other local media.

Google has acknowledged in the past that its AI can generate inaccurate responses to questions.
