10:30 a.m.: Homicide victim was football standout

YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning County Coroner’s office today identified the man shot to death early Tuesday on Salt Springs Road as Theaplus Redmond Jr., 19.

WANE TV in Indianapolis has reported that Redmond is a 2020 graduate of Fort Wayne’s North High School, where he was a football standout.

The Associated Press named him an all state honorable mention defensive lineman in January.

The television station described him as 6-foot-3 and 200-pounds.

Youngstown police said Redmond was shot just after midnight in the 200 block of Salt Springs Road.

Patrol cruisers were called to the home at 12:16 a.m. for a shooting, and found Redmond, who had been shot. He was declared dead at the scene, and his body was taken to the Mahoning County Coroner’s Office.

The two-story home where the shooting took place is at the corner of Salt Springs and Tyrell Avenue near the Valley View apartments.

Investigators said several children were inside the home but none were injured.

Police are requesting anyone with information to call 330-742-8950 or the detective division at 330-742-8911.
