Labra Brothers will be joined by some of its extended musical familia for its first Westside Bowl gig in nearly a year.

Trumpet player Tommy Lehman recorded with the band for its new album, simply titled “The Labra Brothers,” and the instrument now is a part of all its live shows.

Lehman plays with the band whenever he can (and will be at Westside Bowl on July 31), but Adrian Labra said they have a list of other horn players who can step in when Lehman isn’t available.

“The addition of the trumpet on stage with us just adds another dimension.” Labra said. “There’s a lot of frequencies that are getting played through that trumpet that weren’t there in the past, and I think everybody notices that.”

It’s a sound that makes the Mexican influence more pronounced in the band’s music, even though it’s always been an integral component in the band’s blend of rock, soul, funk and R&B.

Also playing with the band — Adrian Labra, guitar, vocals and jarana; Cristian Labra, bass and vocals; David Labra, guitar, saxophone and vocals; Antonio Labra, congas, timbale, percussion; Matt Hayes, drums and percussion; and Danny Svenson, keyboard and synthesizer — will be Akron musician Michael Weber, who also appears on the new record.

“He’s adding guitar and some keys,” Adrian Labra said. “It creates a massive wall of sound, but it also frees me up to get creative with what I’m doing on stage. If he’s playing the standard rhythm guitar parts that I’m normally playing, I can step back and play the jarana, which is a traditional Mexican string instrument, which is also on the album but I don’t normally get to play because I’m playing the guitar, which is a little more important to the structure of the song. It adds a whole new layer of texture and cultural flavor to the new music that we weren’t really able to replicate live before.”

And Youngstown guitar player Rick Ward, who was selected along with the Ohio Players’ Billy Beck as this year’s honorees for Youngstown’s Walk of Fame, will join the band for a cover song as part of the festivities.

All nine tracks of the “Labra Brothers” album have been available on vinyl and CD at its live shows and through the band’s website (thelabrabrothers.com), but the group is taking a different approach digitally. The band started in April releasing a single every month. The fourth single, “Can’t Stop This Train,” will be available on streaming services starting Friday.

“It’s a song that my brother Christian takes the lead on. He’s the primary writer on the song and takes the lead vocal. It’s a song that’s about the fact that he moved to the city (New York City) and is facing a lot of new experiences, new challenges individually. And we’re experiencing a lot of different, new problems and new challenges as well, just having him away. That’s sort of what the song is about — taking those problems by the horns and just pushing through, finding a way to make it work. So excited to have that one out.”

The digital release schedule is an experiment to try to find the best way to engage current fans and reach new ones.

“It’s so weird and kind of exhausting, honestly, to have to pivot every few weeks to a new release. But the growth online has been pretty positive in terms of our streaming, so it’s encouraging to see some of those results after three single releases.”

The band is taking the same experimental approach with its ticket sales, using a model that Westside Bowl has used in recent months to encourage concertgoers to buy their tickets in advance. Traditionally, tickets purchased the day of the show sell for a couple dollars more, but WSB has been offering a significant discount to those who buy in advance. Tickets purchased in advance for the Labra Brothers and Kid Mammoth are $10 ($11.88 with fees). Tickets at the door are twice as much.

“It’s incentivizing the presale,” Laba said. “We’ve done a $15 ticket, and we’ve done a $20 ticket at Westside Bowl, and having a comparatively low price of $10 is just to remove barriers. The cost of going out to see live entertainment has just skyrocketed, and it’s pricing a lot of people out. We want to remove one of those barriers and make it easier for anyone in the community to come out and enjoy some local music and maybe have some food and drink too and not have to worry about totally breaking the bank.

“We’re at over 200 tickets sold now (as of Tuesday), which already matches some of our most highly attended shows at Westside Bowl in the past. And we have another week and a half to go for sales.”
