Gray Areas: Ostatki becomes Valentine’s Day event
Assorted ramblings from the world of entertainment:
• Polish Youngstown’s annual Ostatki celebration turns into a Valentine’s Day party for 2026.
The event, which is kind of a Polish version of Mardi Gras, traditionally is held the weekend before Ash Wednesday.
Since Ash Wednesday is Feb. 18, that makes the Saturday before it the traditional holiday for romance.
This year’s event includes Polish appetizers and a tasting of imported Polish vodkas, beers and liquors along with a gourmet dinner, games, raffles and a Paczki Parade featuring the ultra-rich, pre-Lenten pastries.
Music will be provided by Leather & Lace.
According to Polish Youngstown Director Aundrea Cika Heschmeyer, “This is a big event back in the villages where my ancestors came from in Poland. We wanted to recreate the spirit of those traditions so Valley residents can experience a truly authentic Polish Carnival right here in Youngstown.”
Ostatki starts at 6 p.m. at the Youngstown Country Club. Tickets are $85 and must be purchased in advance online at polishyoungstown.org or at Krakus Polish Deli & Bakery in Boardman.
• The latest installment of James Cameron’s “Avatar” franchise has dominated the theatrical box office since its pre-Christmas release.
Of course, Cameron’s original holiday blockbuster was 1997’s “Titanic,” which won 11 Oscars, earned more than $2 billion worldwide and sparked renewed interest in the 1912 shipwreck.
The Great Lakes Science Center in Cleveland will be displaying “TITANIC: The Artifact Exhibition” this summer.
Opening May 21, the touring exhibition includes more than 200 authentic artifacts recovered from the wrecksite that tell the story of the ship and its passengers and crew.
It also includes life-size reconstructions of the ship’s most famous rooms.
Premiering at GLSC will be the Titanic VR experience, produced in collaboration with Titanic: Honor & Glory.
It is billed as the most detailed and complete VR tour of Titanic ever created, including areas of the ship that weren’t previously visible to the public.
The exhibition has been seen by more than 37 million people worldwide.
Nine research and recovery expeditions at the site have found more than 5,500 artifacts from the wreckage.
Tickets are on sale now for the exhibition and Titanic VR experience at greatsicence.com.
• Inkcarceration Music & Tattoo Festival, one of Ohio’s largest music festivals at one of the more unique locations, announced its 2026 lineup last week.
This year’s fest will be July 17 to 19 on the grounds of the former Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield, the prison used in the film “The Shawshank Redemption.”
More than 65 acts will perform during the three-day event, including Disturbed, Papa Roach, Cypress Hill and Hollywood Undead on July 17; Bad Omens, Gojira, The Used and Sleeping With Sirens on July 18; and Limp Bizkit, A Day To Remember, Motionless In White and Ice Nine Kills on July 19.
It also will include more than 100 tattoo artists, haunted attractions and tours of the prison. Last year’s event drew 90,000 people.
