Howland library hosts holiday event
A holiday celebration is planned from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library Howland Branch, 9095 East Market St. Festivities include children’s crafts, performances by members of the Howland School District Chamber Choir (directed by Mark Semrau) and the arrival of Santa Claus at 7 p.m. Refreshments will be available courtesy of the Friends of the Howland Library. Admission is free.
‘End Is Nigh’ set for Darlene Lounge
“The End is Nigh (And Yet, So Far)” will be the next offering in Kent State University at Trumbull Theatre’s Sips & Scripts series. Nate Chapline directs the Greg Mandryk play about a party center hosting a doomsday cult’s big end-of-the-world bash. Mysterious signs have the staff wondering if maybe the cultists are on to something.
It will be presented readers’ theater style at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Darlene Lounge, 145 W. Market St., Warren. Admission is free.
JCC offers Little Groovers dance class
The Jewish Community Center of Youngstown, 505 Gypsy Lane, will offer a dance program in December for children ages 2 to 5.
Little Groovers is designed to allow children to explore music and movement while building gross motor skills. It will feature a kid-friendly obstacle course where children develop imaginations, coordination and balance. It will meet from 4:30 to 5:15 p.m. Dec. 4, 11 and 18. The cost is $30 for JCC members and $40 for nonmembers. The deadline for registration is Tuesday at jccyoungstown.org/youth.
Buhl band plays holiday concert
The Buhl Community Band, under the direction of Judy L. Mindicino, will present its annual holiday concert at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the ballroom of Avalon Golf and Country Club, 1030 Forker Blvd., Hermitage, Pa. The 50-plus musicians will play such seasonal favorites as “A Rollicking Hanukkah,” “Away in a Manger,” “Christmas, Baby Please Come Home” and “Sleigh Ride.” “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas” will be narrated by Maria Petrella-Ackley, and audience participation will be part of “The Twelve Days of Christmas.” Admission is free, and monetary donations will be accepted at the door for the Mercer County Food Warehouse.
Youth acting workshop offered
Award-winning actress Ashley Rozzi (“The Abiding Nail,” “The Blue Moon Rising”) and commercial producer / director, Jim Fogarty of 2 Ticks & The Dog Productions, Inc. will offer a six-week acting workshop starting in January.
Acting for the Camera (Youth and Beyond) is geared towards adolescents (ages 10 to 14) looking to gain experience and learn the techniques needed to act in front of the camera. Auditioning, scene breakdown, improvisation, vocal techniques, using a teleprompter and other skills will be covered. It will meet from noon to 2 p.m. Saturdays from Jan. 24 to Feb. 28 at 2 Ticks & The Dog, 197 W. Market St., Suite 201, Warren. The cost is $390, and the deadline for applications is Dec. 15. YSU Jazz Combos play tonight
Youngstown State University’s Jazz Combos will perform at 7:30 p.m. today in Bliss Hall’s Ford Theater.
The quintet directed by Kent Engelhardt will play “Chitlins Con Carne” by Kenny Burrell, “Idle Moments” by Duke Pearson and “Song For My Father” by Horace Silver.
Glenn Schaft’s quartet will feature “Bye-Ya” by Thelonious Monk, “Dear Prudence” by Lennon & McCartney (arranged by YSU graduate assistant Eduardo Arce-Monge), “Recordame” by Joe Henderson, “Wichita Lineman” by Jimmy Webb and “The Breakthrough” by Hank Mobley.
Admission is free.
Drama Guild stages ‘Frozen’
The Boardman Drama Guild will stage “Disney’s Frozen: The Broadway Musical” at Boardman Performing Arts Center, 7777 Glenwood Ave.
The musical is based on the popular animated film and features more than 100 Boardman students as cast, crew and musicians in the live pit orchestra.
Show times are 7 p.m. today, Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for students and senior citizens and will be available at the door or can be purchased in advance at www.payschoolsevents.com/events/details/42169.
Chorale sings ‘Messiah’
The Shenango Valley Chorale presents selections from Handel’s “Messiah” at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church, 600 E. State St., Sharon, Pa.
Featured soloists include Bryan Bleakney, Karen Emmett, Chris Kocis, Maggie Kelso, Norm Swiger, Krystal Miller and Susan Woge, and a chamber orchestra will accompany the chorus.

Christmas light show opens
The Joy of Christmas Light Show opens today at Harvey S. Firestone Recreational Park, 298 E. Park Ave., Columbiana.
This year’s drive-through attraction features more than 100 displays and a million lights, gingerbread houses created by students and local professionals and an Ice Caste featuring Santa and Mrs. Claus, an indoor train display, a wish tree and concessions.
It will be open from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday through Sunday through Dec. 14 and then daily from Dec. 17 to Dec. 28 (closed on Christmas day). The cost is $20 per vehicle and $40 for a season pass. Illusionist booked at Packard
Illusionist Leon Etienne will perform April 9 at Packard Music Hall.
Etienne has appeared on “America’s Got Talent,” “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” “Masters of Illusion” and “Penn & Teller: Fool Us!”

YSO musicians play septets at church
Musicians from the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra will perform septets for string and winds by Ludwig van Beethoven and Franz Berwald.
Performing will be Jay Koziorynsky, violin; Johann Diaz Ramirez, viola; Jeffrey Singler, cello; Henry Samuels, bass; Alice Wang, clarinet; Mackenzie Brauns, bassoon; and Zachariah Reed, horn.
The concert starts at 4 p.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church, 600 E. State St., Sharon, Pa. Admission is free, and funding is provided through the Music Performance Trust Fund.
Suicide awareness exhibit at AAC gallery
“Hope In Artistry: Suicide Awareness and Prevention” is on display through Nov. 25 at the Ashtabula Arts Center gallery, 2928 W. 13th St.
The juried show held during National Suicide Prevention Month was created by the Ashtabula County Suicide Prevention Coalition and the Ashtabula County LOSS Team to support survivors of suicide. It offers an artistic outlet for survivors and community artists to show support, raise awareness and start conversations about suicide loss and prevention.
A reception is planned from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Nov. 20. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Admission is free.
Shenango Valley Chorale plans multicourse feasts
Tickets are on sale now for an Olde English Feast, presented by the Shenango Valley Chorale’s Madrigal Singers at Tara, A Country Inn, 2844 Lake Road, Clark, Pa.
The event includes appetizers and a multicourse dinner served family style as well as Renaissance era entertainment with more than 20 songs, trumpet fanfares and predinner entertainment by harpist Kirk Kupensky.

Barnes & Noble hosts author book-signing event on Saturday
A multi-author book signing event runs from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at Barnes & Noble, 381 Boardman-Poland Road, Boardman.
Participants will include Samantha Jo, an award-winning author of dark fantasy and alt-Appalachian fantasy; Kara M. Zone, a romantasy and dark fantasy author; Ciara Hartford, a romantasy and dark fantasy author; and ZL Johnson, a horror author who just released a debut novel.
The first 25 purchasers of indie books will receive a swag bag with merchandise from all four authors.
Brookfield library offers ukulele workshop at public library branch
A “You Can Play Ukulele!” free workshop starts this Saturday at the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library Brookfield Branch, 7032 Grove St.
The Uke Kool Lady, Paulette Darko, will teach the basics of playing the ukulele. Instruments will be available to use during the program or participants can bring their own.

McGuffey Historical Society plans Pretty Boy Floyd program
Pretty Boy Floyd’s connection to East Liverpool will be the topic of the next Memories of a Lifetime program, presented by the William Holmes McGuffey Historical Society.
Retired attorney Tim Brooks will talk about the famous outlaw, who was arrested on an East Liverpool farm in 1934. Brooks served as president of the East Liverpool Historical Society for 40 years and has published articles on historical topics.
The program starts at 10 a.m. Nov. 15 at Denny’s meeting room, 4020 Belmont Ave., Liberty.
Admission is $10 for McGuffey members and $15 for non-members.
