First Wednesday adds music to poetry reading

There will be some music to go along with the poetry at Lit Youngstown’s next First Wednesday Reader Series event.

The Catro Trio will accompany poet Philip Terman, and the program also will feature poet Wendy McVicker.

McVicker served as poet laureate of Athens from 2020 to 2022. Her most recent full-length book is a collaborative collection with poet Cathy Cultice Lentes, “Stronger When We Touch” and chapbook “Alone in the Burning.”

Terman, who lives in Grove City, Pa., is the author of “The Whole Mishpocha” and “My Blossoming Everything” and was co-translator on “Tango Below a Narrow Ceiling: The Selected Poems of Riad Saleh Hussein.”

He co-curates the Jewish Poetry Reading Series, sponsored by the JCC Buffalo, and directs The Bridge Literary Arts Center in Western Pennsylvania.

The Catro Trio, features keyboard player Mark DeWalt, who leads the jazz band Catro and toured internationally; David Kana, a Youngstown-area saxophonist who teaches at Dana School of Music; and Glenn Schaft, director of drumset and percussion studies at YSU’s Dana School of Music.

All three musicians have accompanied multiple poetry readings by Terman.

The program starts at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Westside Bowl, 2617 Mahoning Ave., Youngstown, in its Trophy Room, which is accessible only by stairs. An open mic will follow.

The Youngstown State University Poetry Club is co-host of the evening, and Meg Albani will provide ASL interpretation. Admission is free.

Starting at $3.23/week.
