TCHS Oktoberfest turns 10

Trumbull County Historical Society will raise a stein to a decade of Oktoberfest on the Square.

The 10th annual event is scheduled Sept. 20 at downtown Warren’s Courthouse Square and is one of the organization’s main fundraisers.

“We knew we wanted to do something that was community oriented and sort of unique for the area,” TCHS Executive Director Meghan Reed said. “When we started in 2016, it was really the only one in Trumbull County.

As time has gone on, we definitely have a better sense for what folks want to see, what things work well and what things we should change up.”

One event returning for the first time this decade is the Alphorn blowing contest.

“It had been a staple for many years and then after COVID we stopped doing it,” Reed said. “We are looking at different sanitizing solutions so we can bring it back and the Alphorn competition can be part of this year’s event.”

The grape-stomping competition, with events for adults and children, will continue along with the stein-hoisting competition, originally started as a replacement for the Alphorn event.

Entertainment will be provided by the Youngstown Saxon Band, a staple of Oktoberfest since its second year.

“They have a way of engaging the audience and bringing the audience into their music in ways that are just infectious,” Reed said. “They have a series of different chants that they do with the audience throughout the night. It’s very upbeat, very lively. It’s just the perfect mesh for what we need in terms of the theme of the event and keeping it to be German-inspired entertainment. And they’re just so fun. All of the members of the band have a great time at the event, and they bring their families.”

Nate Barker, chef / owner of the restaurant West & Main, and Elisha Veon, who operates the Babcia’s Lunchbox food truck, will prepare a menu of Bavarian favorites, including bratwurst and German potato salad.

Seasonal brews will be available from seven different breweries / cider houses — Modern Methods, Birdfish, Noble Creature, Dope, Paladin, the 1547 Project and Garrett’s Mill — as well as wines from Webb’s Winery. That’s the largest number of breweries ever represented at the event.

“We’ve strategically grown the number of breweries that are involved,” Reed said.

The commemorative beer glasses sold at the event and other merchandise will feature a new 10th anniversary logo.

“I’m just extremely proud and really humbled by how the community has rallied around Oktoberfest every year and supported us,” Reed said. “Not just as a fundraiser for the historical society but as a really fun, family-friendly event downtown.”
