Commodores ‘Sail On’ to Westminster
Westminster College’s Orr Auditorium will become a “Brick House” on Saturday when it plays host to The Commodores. The Motown act will open the 2025-26 Celebrity Series.
The Commodores were formed in 1968 while attending the Tuskegee Institute. After being discovered by Motown founder Berry Gordy, the group went on to sell 70 million records worldwide. Founding member William King leads the current lineup.
The group had its first top 10 R&B hit with “Machine Gun,” and its top 10 hits on both the Billboard R&B and Hot 100 charts include “Sweet Love,” “Just to Be Close to You,” “Easy,” “Brick House,” “Three Times a Lady,” “Sail On,” “Still,” “Lady (You Bring Me Up),” “Oh No” and “Nightshift.”
“Nightshift” won the group its first and only Grammy Award after being nominated eight times previously. The Commodores were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2003.
