Caring rockers, beer fest raise cash for causes

Assorted ramblings from the world of entertainment:

• There is no shortage of national charities raising money in search of cancer cures and offering help to those battling the many forms of the disease.

Chuck Gisewhite wanted to make sure the money raised here stayed here to help those most in need.

The seventh Rock for the Care event starts at 3 p.m. Saturday at Ross Eatery & Pub, 8421 Tod Ave. SW, Lordstown.

Gisewhite often took his mother to her cancer treatments at Mercy Health-St. Joseph Warren Hospital, and he said she actually enjoyed going there because they treated her so well. After she died, he wanted to do something in her honor and approached the hospital about a fundraiser to help cancer patients with those expenses their health insurance wouldn’t cover.

They created a “Care Closet,” which can help with travel costs for patients to get back and forth to treatment, winter coats or even wigs for those who’ve lost their hair due to chemotherapy.

“These people absolutely need it, but they also have to qualify for it,” Gisewhite said. “It goes to the right people, and it goes for almost anything you could imagine.”

The event started at Lake Tavern in Mecca in 2015. Gisewhite is a musician, so he turned to his musician friends to put together an entertainment lineup of local talent.

Personal issues, the COVID-19 pandemic and a fire that destroyed Lake Tavern in 2022 forced Gisewhite to take a hiatus with the event, but it found a new home at Ross Eatery.

In addition to Sideshow and Mr. Lucky, two bands that Gisewhite plays in, this year’s entertainment lineup includes Junkyard Dawg, Gray Beard Band, Thrown Together, November Loop, Nineteenth Paradise and Phestur! Each band will play about 45 minutes, and there will be acoustic acts in between the band sets.

“We’ve got classic rock, oldies, modern rock, so they’ll be dancing,” Gisewhite said. “It’s family oriented. It’s such a good time, and all the people are happy because they want to be a part of it.”

A donation of $10 is requested at the door. There also will be basket and 50/50 raffles and all proceeds will go to the care closet. Last year’s event raised $7,000.

“The year before that, we raised $5,200,” he said. “Each year we’ve always been able to better ourselves. I don’t like to try to set my goals too high, because I don’t want people to be disappointed. In the back of my mind, we’d like to raise $10,000. But if we do as good as we did last year, maybe a little bit better, I’ll be happy.”

And the leader of Mr. Lucky hopes the event’s lucky streak continues.

“We’ve never had a drop of rain,” Gisewhite said. “One year in Mecca, it rained in Cortland, but it didn’t rain on us.”
