New Waterford gets Amped Up
Mayors and administrators in small communities often wear many hats.
Concert promoter normally isn’t one of them.
Amped Up brings three days of music to New Waterford Village Park this weekend, and it’s the first of two music festivals this summer planned at the village-owned park.
The nonprofit group organizing both events is led by New Waterford Mayor Shane Patrone and Village Administrator Jason Gorby.
“We’re a small town, about 1,300, 1,500 people, not a lot of industries,” Patrone said. “There’s not a lot of money for our park and to do events and other things … We created the 501c3, to be able to provide events, but then also raise money for the park.”
It started off with classic rock cover bands for the first two years, and last year they brought in hard rock act Saliva, whose radio hits in the early 2000s included “Your Disease,” “Always” and “Survival of the Sickest,” as the headliner for the first night and country artist CJ Solar for the second night.
Patrone said Saliva contacted them about coming back this year, and they will be one of the two headliners along with Hinder for the New Waterford Music Festival, scheduled for Sept. 12 and 13.
While they were working on that event, Youngstown boxer and promoter Kelly Pavlik approached them about partnering on an event for the Kelly Pavlik Charitable Organization, so Patrone and Gorby decided to organize a second music weekend at the park.
Amped Up will sandwich rock between country acts on Friday and Sunday.
Friday’s lineup will feature Lewis Brice, the younger brother of Lee Brice, who is featured on the title track of Lewis Brice’s 2023 album “Product Of.” Lewis Brice’s newest single is “She Loves My Country” and his song “It’s You (I’ve Been Looking For)” has nearly 16 million plays on Spotify. Mark Mackay, who opened for Solar last year, will open for Brice.
“Having worked with Mark Mackay in the past, he helped us out getting Lewis,” Gorby said. “And he also knows Morgan Myles from ‘The Voice.’ They’re all intertwined together.”
Myles, who finished third on the NBC reality competition series in 2022 and holds the record for the fastest time for all four judges spinning their chairs in the show’s history, will perform Sunday along with local acts The Conkle Brothers and The Berrys.
Saturday’s lineup is led by The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus. Since it started 21 years ago in Jacksonville, Fla., TRJA’s songs have been streamed more than 1.5 billion times, including the quintuple Platinum hits “Face Down” and “Your Guardian Angel.” The band’s new single is “Slipping Through (No Kings).”
Also playing Saturday will be Tantric (best known for the rock radio hits “Breakdown,” “Astounded,” “The Chain” and “Down and Out”) and Turbo Lovers.
“Teaming up with Team Pavlik and New Waterford Friends, we’re able to do another great show for the area,” Gorby said.
Patrone and Gorby are hoping to draw between 2,000 and 2,500 for the Friday and Saturday shows. Never having done an event on Sunday before, Patrone said they’re not sure about possible attendance that day but are expecting at least 1,000 people.
“We’re not a huge venue,” Patron said. “There’s no seats. It’s open air. It’s $10 to get in, and people can pay 10 bucks and be three foot from the stage, right in front of the acts, or they can sit on picnic tables or under tents and enjoy the show from further back … It’s not like most concerts where you have to pay $60 or $80 to be up close.”
While last year’s shows drew concertgoers from throughout Ohio and western Pennsylvania and as far away as Michigan, the objective is to raise some money for the park and to bring some entertainment to residents who are used to having to travel outside of the area to see national acts.
“A family that lives in the area that may not be able to afford to go to Pittsburgh or Cleveland can bring their kids and friends down here and spend 30, 40 bucks and see a quality concert,” Patrone said. “That was our goal.”
