City celebrates birthday with vintage brew

Anyone old enough to have consumed a Youngstown-brewed Renner beer has been able to collect Social Security for more than a decade.

That will change on Friday when Penguin City Brewing Company taps its version of Renner’s Old Bavaria to celebrate the city of Youngstown’s 229th birthday.

The brewery that dates back to the late 1800s stopped making beer in Youngstown in 1962. The new brew came about through a collaboration involving Penguin City, the Mahoning Valley Historical Society and Carl James, an heir of the Renner family.

Penguin City co-owner Aspasia Lyras-Bernacki said they found several old Renner beer bottles while renovating their building at 460 E. Federal St. She reached out to MVHS Director Bill Lawson, who put her in contact with James. They started exchanging emails and the topic of doing a beer came up. James and Penguin City co-owner Richard Bernacki settled on Old Bavaria, and James was able to find an old recipe for the beer among the company’s voluminous paperwork.

“They worked on it together, modified it, and they probably brewed about three test batches until Richie and Carl were finally happy with the result,” Lyras-Bernacki said.

Once they decided to brew the beer, the historical society’s annual celebration of Youngstown’s founding seemed like the perfect release date.

“We thought that all sounded wonderful, just a nice celebration of Youngstown’s birthday and this partnership between the oldest and newest brewery in Youngstown,” Lyras-Bernacki said. “We thought that was a nice collaboration.”

There’s a private event at 4 p.m. Friday, but the celebration will be open to the public at 5 p.m.

There will be birthday cupcakes and a limited edition glass for the first 144 pours from the tap. Richard Bernacki will lead attendees in singing “Happy Birthday, Youngtown.”

Canned six packs (with a design reminiscent of the original along with the added information required on a packaged beer in 2025) will be available only at the taproom.

Lyras-Bernacki said they expect the initial canning of six packs to sell out quickly, but there will be a second release.

Kegs of Old Bavaria will be available at select area bars and restaurants, she said.

The collaboration could lead to future Renner releases.

“It’s just dependent on what the market wants,” Lyras-Bernacki said. “If the market likes this and they want it, and we keep growing it, then we’ll look into doing other ones. They want to revive the Renner name, so it would be really cool if Penguin City houses Renner beer here in our brewery. That would be the dream.”

Starting at $3.23/week.
