Warren Junior Military Band’s legacy honored
The Canfield Community Concert Band will pay tribute to the Warren Junior Military Band and its longtime leader, Donald W. “Squire” Hurrelbrink, at a concert Sunday at Zion Lutheran Church.
Hurrelbrink led the band, which began as the VFW Boys Band in 1927, for 66 years, starting in 1930. He died in 1999, three years after retiring as director.
Many of the student band’s members continued to pursue music, either as educators or musicians, including more than 10 current members of the Canfield Community Concert Band.
When WJMB discontinued operations in 2010, the Canfield band acquired its music library.
Sunday’s concert will feature selections from that collection, including Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Folks Song Suite, excerpts from Pyotr IlyichTchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture,” John Morrissey’s “Caribbean Fantasy, selections from Henry Mancini’s “Mr. Lucky,” Jaime Texidor’s “Amparito Roca” and marches by John Philip Sousa.
The Canfield Community Concert Band is an all-volunteer ensemble open to musicians of all ages and abilities from across the Mahoning Valley. Formed in 1976, the band performs throughout the region and continues its mission to bring quality concert music to the community.
Rehearsals are held Tuesdays from 7 to 9 p.m. at Canfield High School.
The concert starts at 3 p.m. Sunday at the church, 3300 Canfield Road, Youngstown. Admission is free, but attendees are encouraged to bring nonperishable food items or make monetary donations to the church’s food ministry. For more information, go to www.canfieldccband.org.
