Band remembers fallen military with Memorial Day concert

The W.D. Packard Concert Band will play songs of war and peace for its “Memorial Day Remembrance.”

Two vocalists will join the band at 3 p.m. Sunday at Packard Music Hall.

Doug Thomas, who has performed with the Packard band multiple times, will do “Arlington,” a song written by Jeremy Spillman and Dave Turnbull that is sung from the perspective of a soldier who was killed in battle and buried in Arlington National Cemetery. It was a country hit for Trace Adkins in 2005.

Thomas, whose current bands include the Chicago tribute Brass Metropolis and Memphis Soul Brew, will be joined by Hannah Fenneken for a rendition of “Let There Be Peace on Earth.”

“She’s a junior at Boardman High School,” said Thomas Groth, executive director of the band. “I heard her sing, and she was very good. We had this version of ‘Let There Be Peace on Earth’ that is taken after the Vince Gill arrangement that he sang with his daughter. We’ve done it once before a number of years ago.”

Jim Garber, who plays piano with the band and its smaller ensembles, will serve as narrator on Robert W. Smith’s “Stone Gardens.” Groth said the narration is letters written to loved onesby soldiers who later were killed in battle.

Garber also will deliver a narration with video accompaniment that will be part of “America the Beautiful” as the concert finale.

One of the songs Groth is looking forward to is Franz Schubert’s “Ave Maria.”

“That is sung at a lot of funerals, so it fits in with this,” he said.

“It’s a beautiful setting by Frank Tichelli of Schubert’s ‘Ave Maria,’ and it’s really a gorgeous piece for the band.”

The Packard Dixieland Band will be spotlighted on “Anchors Away in Dixie,” which is a dixieland-style arrangement of the Navy anthem “Anchors Aweigh.”

A medley of songs associated with the different branches of the services will be performed.

Other selections on the program, conducted by Galen S. Karriker, include “A Celebration of Taps,” arranged by Jerry Brubaker; Richard Rodgers’ “Guadalcanal” march; and Antonin Dvorak’s “The Gallant Seventh” march.
