Applications being taken for talent competition
Applications are being accepted for The Valley Artist Showcase, a talent competition open to musicians and singers ages 14 to 23 years old.
The idea was brought to DownBeat Musical Arts Centre by local businessman Rob Berk, who wanted to produce an old-school “battle of the bands”-style competition.
Those selected will compete at Packard Music Hall in the fall on a date to be determined.
Judges for the competition will be Amanda Beagle, former Miss Ohio and owner of Amanda Beagle Vocal Studio; Billy Beck, a musician and member of the Ohio Players; Doug Thomas, who has sung with many area bands dating back to the 1960s; Jackie Popovec, lead singer of The Vindys; and Mariano Longo and Marty Cohen, president and vice president, respectively of the DownBeat.
Prizes include the chance to open for The Vindys at an upcoming concert and a recording session for one song at Peppermint Recording Studio in Youngstown.
The deadline for applications is May 31, and the application form and full requirements are available at valleyartistshowcase.com.
There is no initial application fee. For those selected to audition for the judges, there will be a $40 application fee.
Those invited to compete as a finalist at Packard Music Hall will have to pay a $50 competition fee.
