Gray Areas: Boardman hosts horror movie premiere
• Low-budget filmmaking seems to be flourishing in the region.
A couple of weeks ago, two movies had special screenings the same weekend as the Youngstown Film Festival featured works by local directors as well as international offerings.
Boardman Movies 8, which hosted the premiere of “Midwest Sessions” on Oct. 19, will screen “The Devil’s Wasteland” at 6 p.m. Sunday.
It’s the latest movie from New Castle, Pa., filmmaker Vince Burkett, who’s directed five other features and several short films since 2020, according to his IMDb.com page.
Burkett’s last film, “Rotten: Welcome to the Freak Show,” had its premiere at the theater back in March.
“The Devil’s Wasteland” is described as, “A thrilling journey into a post-apocalyptic world filled with monstrous creatures and unyielding survival challenges.”
Survivors of a deadly plague roam the North American wasteland in hopes of a future, according to its IMDb plotline. They encounter a cannibalistic family with a deranged cult-like leader. Things take a turn for the worse as the survivors are kidnapped and tortured.
Most of the cast and crew will be in attendance at Sunday’s premiere, and those in attendance will have the opportunity to participate in discussions about the filmmaking process and hear behind-the-scenes stories.
Tickets for the movie are $10 and are available in advance online at thedevilswasteland.rsvpify.com.
And for those who missed “Midwest Sessions” earlier this month, the movie will get an encore screening at Boardman Movies 8 at 6 p.m. Nov. 17. Tickets for that showing are available online at boardmanmovies8.com.
* With temperatures still in the 70s this week, it seems the summer of 2024 never ended, but there’s already news about some of 2025’s biggest music events.
Sonic Temple Art & Music Festival at Crew Stadium in Columbus from May 8 to 11 announced its full lineup last week with more than 100 bands performing over two days.
Metallica, which is playing the festival for the first time, is the headliner on both May 10 and 12, and will play a different set each night. Rob Zombie and Alice Cooper also will play the first show and Alice in Chains and Chevelle will help close out the festival.
Korn is the headliner on opening night along with Bad Omens and Three Days Grace, and the May 11 dates has Linkin Park with its new lead vocalist along with Incubus and I Prevail.
Three Days Grace is reuniting with original vocalist Adam Gontier, Acid Bath will reunite for a festival appearance and Crossfade will play its first show in 13 years at Sonic Temple.
GWAR will be celebrating its 40th anniversary, Bullet for My Valentine will play a special set to mark the 20th anniversary of its album “The Poison” and Trivium will do the same for its 2005 album “Ascendancy.”
The full lineup is available at sonictemplefestival.com.
Tickets also are on sale for the Buckeye Country Superfest at Ohio Stadium on June 21.
The music might be different but Superfest headliner Jelly Roll would look right at home in the crowd at Sonic Temple.
