Straw Hat open for ‘Business’

Straw Hat Theatre opens the musical “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” on Friday for a seven-performance run.

The Frank Loesser / Abe Burrows / Jack Weinstock / Willie Gilbert musical was a Broadway hit when it debuted in 1961, winning seven Tony Awards, including best new musical, and running for more than 1,400 performances. Two Broadway revivals — one in 1995 starring Matthew Broderick and a second in 2011 starring Daniel Radcliffe — each ran for more than a year and were nominated for best revival of a musical.

Mary Ann Kline, who directs the Straw Hat production, describes it as, “A zany romp through the office of the World Wide Wicket Company in New York City in the early 1960s. We watch J. Pierrepont Finch transition from a window washer’s ladder to the corporate ladder as he follows the guidance of a ‘How To’ book, and learn that sometimes no real skill is needed to get ahead — just bamboozle your way to the top.”

Bryan Cataldo serves as musical director.
