Packard museum gets ready for car show, new exhibits
Those attending the Corvettes & Classics Car Show Saturday outside the National Packard Museum will be able to see new exhibits inside the museum.
One of the new additions is an exhibit on Packard Motor Company’s golden anniversary and the 1949 Packard.
“It will feature a ’49 Packard that people can actually sit in the car and hear about 1949,” said Mary Ann Porinchak, executive director of the museum. “It’s like a four-minute audio-video kind of thing inside the car.”
The car was rescued from a junkyard in Niles, and museum volunteers worked to restore and paint the vehicle.
“We’ve always wanted to have a Packard the people could get inside of,” said Charles Ohlin, director of education and research at the museum. “A lot of people have never sat in a Packard.”
Also new is an expanded look at the Lincoln Highway Association, an effort led by Packard Motor Car Company President Henry Bourne Joy in the 1910s to have a concrete roadway built that spanned from New York to San Francisco.
“We’ve installed a new Lincoln Highway touchscreen exhibit that tells all about the Lincoln Highway and Henry Joy’s involvement, the routes that it went and some fun facts about it,” she said. “It’s a much more informative exhibit than we previously had, and it’s interactive.”
The Lincoln Highway display had been in the works for two years, Porinchak said, and it finally happened thanks to a generous donation.
“After our last newsletter, a very wonderful donor, who wants to remain anonymous, came in and said, ‘See this wish list? I want to buy all these things for you.’ I was ecstatic. So he donated the money for us to install that. We’d already had the content created for it, so we put that right into play.”
It will be something new to see on one of the museum’s busiest days of the year. The Corvettes & Classics Car Show traditionally attracts around 200 vehicles, about half of which are Corvettes and the rest being vintage automobiles of many makes and models.
“The Corvette club is just a wonderful group of people to work with, and their sole reason for helping us is to help raise money for this treasure in our community,” Porinchak said. “We’re so appreciative of that.”
Entertainment will be provided by the Packard Dixieland Band at noon and DJ Thomas John. There will be a food truck and concessions operated by museum volunteers. Basket raffles and door prizes also are planned.
Registration will be different this year, at least for Corvette owners. Last year’s show was affiliated with the National Council of Corvette Clubs, and Corvette owners paid an additional fee to be eligible for NCCC points.
This year’s show is non-affiliated, so the registration fee is $10 for all participants, and registration will include one free admission to the museum.
Porinchak said they hope to net at least $5,000 after expenses from Saturday’s event.
