Packard Band makes a musical journey to France, Olympics
WARREN — The W.D. Packard Concert Band will get listeners ready for the 2024 Summer Olympics with its next concert.
Sunday’s program is a tribute to the Olympics and France, the host country for the event, which runs July 26 through Aug. 11 in Paris.
Galen Karricker will lead the band in a program that includes John Williams’ Olympic Fanfare and Theme, Jacques Offenbach’s “La Belle Helene” overture, John Philip Sousa’s “Hail to the Spirit of Liberty” and “Stars and Stripes Forever” marches, George Gershwin’s “An American in Paris,” Leo Delibes’ “March and Procession of Bacchus” from the ballet “Sylvia,” selections from the musical “Les Miserables,” A Turlet’s “French National Defile” march and Warren Barker’s “In Praise of Freedom.”
Euphonium player Thomas Brucoli will be the featured soloist on the “Flower Song” from Georges Bizet’s opera “Carmen.” Brucoli is a 34-year veteran of the band, playing both euphonium and bass trombone. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Youngstown State University’s Dana School of Music and retired from Champion Local Schools in 2013 after 35 years as a music educator.
The concert starts at 7 p.m. Sunday at the south lawn bandshell of Packard Music Hall, 1703 Mahoning Ave. NW, Warren. Admission is free, and funding is provided by the W.D. Packard trust.
