Neville brings ‘90s country to Trumbull fair

’90s country was Julia Neville’s salvation. Now it’s her inspiration.

Neville will perform Wednesday in the grandstand as part of the Trumbull County Fair, which runs Tuesday through July 14 at the fairgrounds in Bazetta.

While she does some originals — and is working on more – her show is dominated by the ’90s country she heard growing up.

“I would say music healed me as a child,” Neville said. “When I was going through some tough stuff, being abused as a child, music was my safe haven. It always made me feel better. That’s the music era I really pulled from and encouraged me to keep going and keep living life.”

Expect to hear hits by acts like Shania Twain and Jo Dee Messina during her show next week as well as some ’90s songs that weren’t staples, at least not on country radio.

“4 Non-Blondes’ ‘What’s Up?’ that’s usually the last song (of the set),” she said. “And I do Alanis Morissette, one of my favorite songs (‘Uninvited’). It’s a little rocky, but we put our own twist on it.”

Neville believes the songs from that era were about something, but she also understands the importance of music in providing fun and escape.

“Life can get pretty life-y out there,” she said.

“I want them to forget about life for a while and enjoy it. I’m thankful to be able to help people enjoy life and just enjoy music.

“I teach a line dance at my show and get the crowd involved. I’m excited to meet everyone and get in the crowd and make people have a great time, laugh and make memories.”

Neville started singing at a young age but she stopped performing after the death of her stepfather.

With the encouragement of her husband, Mike Neville, she started performing again after a long layoff.

Over the last decade, the southeast-Ohio based singer has built up a busy touring schedule.

She’ll play about two dozen shows between now and Labor Day, including taking the stage right before ACM Entertainer of the Year winner Lainey Wilson at The Country Concert music festival in Fort Laramie two days after her Trumbull County Fair appearance.

She credited the hard work she puts in off stage for that busy concert schedule.

“It’s more about relationships and building those,” she said. “We do a lot of the conventions, where we set up a table for fairs and festivals and we basically show what we got. Sometimes you get to do a showcase, 15 or 20 minutes to show them what you have and what you could offer at their fairs and festivals.

“When we play a place, it’s like a snowball effect. We always get a show from another show. That’s been the best thing for us, showing them we’re real people and really love the people we play for and are there to make them have a great time.”

Neville’s husband plays rhythm guitar in her band, which also features David Morse, lead guitar; Alex Francis, drums; Kasey Moore, fiddle and mandolin; and Rob Hendricks, bass.

“This is probably the best band I’ve ever had,” Neville said.

Neville released the EP “Survivor” in 2017 and penned the title track, and she released the single “Just Be You” last year, which she also wrote. She plans to release a new recording of “Survivor” and one or two other originals later this year.

“I definitely like to write music that makes people feel something.”
