TCHS, Warren library partner for Family Day

The third annual Family Day is scheduled Saturday at the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library.

The event is a partnership between the Trumbull County Historical Society and the library, which also will be kicking off its summer reading program Summer Challenge! that day.

“Family Day was started because we wanted to come up with a truly free event for children of all ages to appreciate and enjoy,” said Ryan McLennan, TCHA director of operations and outreach. “Everything is very expensive these days, we wanted to be able to offer something that would allow people to have free yet fun activities and food.”

Area nonprofits will provide hands-on activities for children, ranging from bubble fun to historical games. The Warren police and fire departments will have vehicles on site to tour.

Through a sponsorship from the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley, lunch will be available for children for free from Babcia’s Lunchbox food truck while supplies last.

Family Day initially was held on the grounds of the TCHS’s Morgan History Center a block south of the library.

“Since then, we have learned a lot about location and as word has spread, more organizations have opted to participate and expand the amount of activities that are available,” MacLennan said.

Joining forces with the library made sense.

“The library shared that they were hosting their Summer Challenge! kickoff party on June 1, and we were looking for a similar date to host Family Day,” MacLennan said. ” We decided instead of trying to host separate events, it would be best to try to work collaboratively. Since they hope to attract many youth and their families to participate, we figured it would be beneficial for all to be able to experience both at the same time and the same place.”

Summer Challenge! kickoff activities will include craft and activity stations with Bigfoot researcher Amy Bue, therapy rabbits from Frisky Ferrets, Fuzzies and Feathered Friends Rescue and Sanctuary, a life-size Mario Party in Teen Central, button making in the library’s Maker Studio and free ice cream from Cockeye Creamery while supplies last.

Live entertainment will be provided by Clay Colley in the KidSpace at noon and by Crash the Great at 1 p.m.

Both events are 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in and around the library, 444 Mahoning Ave. NW, Warren.

“We hope to get as many families out and together for a unique and enjoyable afternoon,” MacLennan said. “We want children to learn about history and be involved in their communities. Lastly, we want everyone to have a great time and cherish these moments with their friends and loved ones.”
