‘The Girl 2’ premieres in Boardman

“The Girl” is on a rampage again.

Warren filmmaker Travis Bowen, who wrote and directed the 2011 horror/slasher film, is back along with former Playboy model Lisa Neeld of Cortland, who played the title character, for “The Girl 2,” which will have its premiere Sunday at Boardman Movies 8.

They will have some well-known costars with them as well on screen.

Bowen also promotes horror/pop culture conventions, and in the past he’s used the guests for those events to shoot small roles for his micro-budget films. The original “The Girl” featured appearances by Robert Z’Dar (“Maniac Cop,” “Tango & Cash”), Ari Lehman (“Friday the 13th”) and Conrad Brooks (“Plan 9 from Outer Space,” “Ed Wood”).

This time Bowen brought in Gigi Edgley, best known for playing Chiana on the sci-fi series “Farscape,” specifically for several days of shooting.

When Marc Price, best known for playing Skippy on the 1980s sitcom “Family Ties” and starring in the ’80s horror film “Trick or Treat,” was in town for a standup comedy gig at the Funny Farm Comedy Club, Bowen recruited him for the movie and wrote a part specifically for him.

“The mayor was only referenced in the movie (originally), but I wrote a scene for the mayor and made him like the mayor in ‘Jaws,'” Bowen said.

In addition to local talent, other actors with major credits include Leonora Scelfo and Nancy Anne Ridder, who both appeared in Wes Craven’s “Scream,” and Dylan Postl, who played the title character in “Leprechaun: Origins” and also is known as WWE wrestler Hornswoggle.

Bowen said he’d been thinking about doing a sequel to “The Girl” for years.

“It just got pushed back and pushed back,” he said. “When COVID happened, I had the time and was able to sit down and write the sequel.”

In the original, Neeld plays the daughter of a woman who slashes up her family. The daughter survives the rampage, but a sexual assault years later triggers her own murderous urges and she goes on a killing spree of her own.

“The sequel takes place 10 years after the original,” Bowen said. “Lisa’s character’s been in a mental health facility all these years … She escapes and creates havoc throughout the facility.”

Bowen said the sequel has more comedy than the first film did, and he described it more as a horror comedy than straight horror.

Bowen also has a larger role in this film, which is why he and Ken Sechrist co-directed the sequel. Sechrist, who serves as director of photography and composed the film’s score, also reprises his role as Detective Jack Campbell from the original, and Bowen said they traded off with one assuming the director’s chair when the other was acting.

Many of the people involved with the film will be in attendance at Sunday’s premiere, including Neeld, Scelfo and Ridder along with local cast and crew. They will be signing movie posters designed by artist Dan Gorman after the screening.

The original “The Girl” will be shown Saturday at the horror convention Monsterfest Mania in Cuyahoga Falls with actors and crew from both films there. What happens after Sunday hasn’t been determined.

“At some point we want to do a Blu-ray release,” Bowen said. “For the original, we had it on Amazon for streaming. We might do something similar for this. There are a lot more streaming options now.”
