‘Superstar’ series brings Carpenters’ music to life

Westminster College Celebrity Series presents “Superstar. The Songs. The Stories. The Carpenters” on March 9.

The concert will mix songs and unique backstage stories that share an authentic picture of the Carpenters, who rose to fame in the 1970s, and its chart-topping career. The Carpenters had 20 top 40 hits between 1970 and 1981.

The show stars Helen Welch, a frequent guest vocalist with the W.D. Packard Concert Band and Big Band Sound of Packard. Welch grew up in England and has performed on London’s West End and Broadway as well as performing with the Cleveland Orchestra, Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, Grant Park (Chicago) Symphony Orchestra, Florida Symphony and Columbus Jazz Orchestra.

Her alto voice embraces new arrangements of such Carpenters’ hits as “We’ve Only Just Begun,” “Top of the World,” “Close to You,” and the title song “Superstar.”

The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. at Orr Auditorium, Westminster Drive, New Wilmington, Pa.

Tickets are $43 and $39 and are available online at www.westminster.edu/celebrity and by calling 724-946-7354.
