Pipino series swings with Lincoln Center jazz tour

The Donald P. Pipino Performing Arts Series brings an evening of jazz to Youngstown State University on Friday.

Jazz at Lincoln Center Presents Sing and Swing features Bria Skonberg and Benny Benack III, who both are trumpet players, vocalists and co-music directors.

They will relive and re-imagine some of the classic partners in jazz and popular song, including Ella Fitzgerald, Judy Garland and Bing Crosby and Dean Martin and Peggy Lee and perform songs by George and Ira Gershwin, duke Ellington, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin and others.

They will be accompanied by Jocelyn Gould, guitar; Mathis Picard, piano; Charles Goold, drums; and Mark Lewandowski, bass.

For more than 30 years, Jazz at Lincoln Center has been a leading advocate for jazz, culture, and arts education globally. Under the direction of Wynton Marsalis, Jazz at Lincoln Center has brought the art form of jazz from the heart of New York City to 446 cities in more than 40 countries.

The Jazz at Lincoln Center Presents touring initiative provides an affordable opportunity to present great jazz programming, featuring up-and-coming musicians who have been identified as rising stars by JALC. The initiative also allows for expansion of the mission of JALC to entertain, enrich and expand a global community for jazz through performance, education, and advocacy.

Sing and Swing starts at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Bliss Hall’s Ford Theater. Tickets are $30 for adults, $25 for senior citizens and YSU staff and alumni, $5 for youths and free for children and YSU students. Tickets are available online at www.tix.com/ticket-sales/ysu/4712 and at the door.
