Medici puts Ohio’s best on display

The Ohio Arts Council’s 2023 Biennial Juried Exhibition opens Sunday at the Medici Museum of Art.

The show opened last fall at the Riffe Gallery in Columbus, and Medici is the only other venue where it will be seen. It’s the third exhibition from the OAC that Medici has hosted and a fourth, a printmaking exhibition called “In Touch,” is scheduled for late April.

Medici Executive Director Katelyn Amendolara-Russo said the museum has benefited from the partnership.

“We’ve definitely gotten more exposure since having the Biennial (in 2022),” she said. “It’s connected us to other museums and galleries within the state, and it’s been a nice collaborative experience.”

Artists featured in the biennial and the exhibition of women artists last fall have come to Medici to see their work on display, Amendolara-Russo added, and those connections could lead to solo shows in the future.

The 2023 Biennial features the work of 63 artists selected from more than 1,600 submissions statewide.

“I think it’s a really strong show,” Amendolara-Russo said. “It showcases many different mediums, from painting and sculpture to printmaking.

“Compared to the last one, I think there were a lot more installations in the initial biennial. This one has a lot of two-dimensional works and a lot of portraiture, but overall it’s a very strong show.”

While the exhibition is dominated by artists based in the state’s largest cities, this biennial includes the work of two local artists — Julie Martin of Masury and Summer Zickafoose of Canfield.

Jurors for the exhibition were Melissa Crum, an artist and founder of Mosaic Education Network; Yusuf A. Lateef, a visual artist, educator and co-founder of Radiant City Arts and the Toledo Black Arts Coalition; and Jolene Powell, McCoy Professor of Art and director of Gallery 310 at Marietta College.

Best in show honors went to David Denniston for his painting “Welcome to Ice Cream Land.” Each juror also selected an entry for a juror’s award. Crum’s choice was “Indiscernible Faces” by Don “DonCee” Coulter. Lateef selected “Protect” by Ana England. And Powell picked “The Walls Are No Defense” by Aimee Lee.

Other artists featured are: Keegan Adams, Jeanie Coy Auseon, Elham Bayati, Amy Beeler, Edmund Boateng, Jennifer Brown, Duarte Brown, Nora Daniel, Palli Davene Davis, Marcus Dixon, Kari Djuve, Sarah Dugger, Craig Fisher, Molly Fitzpatrick, Jennifer Geraci, Mark Giangaspero, Will Grimm, Tina Gutierrez, Christopher Hartway, Hiroshi Hayakawa, Dan Hernandez, Michael W.
