ASHTABULA -- 13th Street Theatre opens its 2023-24 season at the Ashtabula Arts Center with "The Diary of Anne Frank."
Created from the real historical writings of Anne Frank, the play (directed by Bob Kilpatrick) provides a window into the years Anne (played by Rylee Schor) and her Jewish family spent in hiding from Nazi persecution during World War II.
Anne's diary was published by her father, Otto Frank, in 1947, two years after she died of typhus at the age of 15 while imprisoned with her sister Margot in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. Anne wrote her final diary entry Aug. 1, 1944, three days before the Nazis arrested and imprisoned her family.
Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday through Sept. 24 at the center, 2928 W. 13th St., Ashtabula.
The Sept. 23 performance will be preceded by a talk at 6 p.m. by Holocaust survivor Erika Gold. The Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage in Beachwood is partnering with the theater on the production, and provided the cast and crew of "The Diary of Anne Frank" a museum tour.
Tickets are $17 for adults, $15 for students, senior citizens and military and $13 for children ages 2 to 12 if purchased in advance online at ashtabulaartscenter.org or by calling 440-964-3396. Tickets are $19, $17 and $15 at the door.
A school performance is scheduled at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 21 with all tickets for $10.
