Straw Hat stages Tony-winning musical ‘Once’

The musical “Once” closes the Straw Hat Theatre summer season.

On the streets of Dublin, an Irish musician (Ethan Legere) and a Czech immigrant (Libby Kendzerski) are drawn together by their shared love of music. Over the course of one fateful week, an unexpected friendship and collaboration quickly evolves into a powerful but complicated love story, underscored by emotionally charged music.

The musical by Enda Walsh with music and lyrics by Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova is based on the 2007 film by John Carney, which won an Academy Award for best original song.

The stage production, which opened in 2012 and ran for nearly three years on Broadway, won eight Tony Awards, including best new musical.

The Straw Hat production is directed by Stephen Rhodes with music direction by Debra Flemming.

“Once” will be staged 7:30 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday through Aug. 20 on the grounds of Ashtabula Arts Center, 2928 W. 13th St., Ashtabula. Tickets are $15 for adults, $13 for students, senior citizens and military and $11 children for ages 2 to 12 if purchased in advance, and $17, $15 and $13 at the door. Tickets are available at ashtabulaartscenter.org or call 440-964-3396.
