Boxcar rolls out pair of albums

These days, releasing an album every couple of years is considered prolific.

Rolling Boxcar International is celebrating the release of its second album of 2023 with a show Saturday at Birdfish Brewing Co.

Then again, it’s appropriate for a group that got its start when Richard Blair and Angelo LaMarca bonded over their mutual love of Bob Dylan.

“If there was a record label or management involved, they’d be like, ‘You’re crazy. Why are you doing it this way?,’ but Dylan used to release two albums a year,” Blair said.

“The Beginning of Light and Movement” came out as a digital-only release in January, and both it and the new album “Shadowlands” will be available for the first time on vinyl at Saturdays’ show.

“There’s been such a delay across the board (with vinyl),” Blair said. “We had it done at Gotta Groove Records in Cleveland, and everything they sent said don’t announce a release date … Once Gotta Groove said the records are ready, we already had a show booked at Birdfish, so let’s release the other album and get it all out there.”

Dylan and The Band clearly are reference points for the group, but at times the harmonies recall The Jayhawks, and the music has the dreamier shoegaze-Americana-hybrid vibe of Band of Horses.

When the group performs live, Blair and LaMarca are on guitar and lead vocals while Michael Estok is on drums and harmony vocals and Tony Nigro is on bass and backing vocals. However, in the studio, each member is a multi-instrumentalist and brings diverse influences to the mix.

“Tony is a hard rock fan,” Blair said. “Eddie Van Halen is his musical hero. That’s where he leans more. I started writing songs and learned to play guitar because of Bob Dylan. At the same time, I like a wide variety of music — soul, R&B. Michael is a huge fan of the Beach Boys and Motown.”

Some of the band’s songs have gotten airplay on The Summit public radio station, and the group performed at Stambaugh Auditorium in 2022 as part of The Summit’s 330 Day concert.

“The Summit continuing to support what we’re doing continues to motivate me, not so much for notoriety, but knowing what we’re doing connects to someone else,” Blair said. “That kind of thing makes you want to keep going.”

RBI also will perform Sept. 9 at the Canfield Fall Festival on the Village Green, which is near where Estok’s Court Street Recording studio is located.

With two albums now available, RBI would like to play out more, but everyone has jobs, families and other responsibilities.

“We’re sort of taking things as they come,” Blair said. “In our hearts, we’d love to do it more, but syncing four households is a challenge.”
