MTC, Hopewell plan a ‘Wedding’

Tony and Tina are getting married again.

The couple tied the knot more than 50 times in the 1990s when the Oakland Center for the Arts staged the interactive comedy at various locations in the Mahoning Valley.

The Millennial Theatre Company and Hopewell Theatre will collaborate on two performances next weekend at St. Luke Roman Catholic Church of “Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding,” created by the comedy troupe Artificial Incompetence.

MTC Director Joe Asente said the idea was hatched last fall during auditions for “Into the Woods,” which MTC staged at Hopewell.

“It started from a conversation with (Hopewell Executive Director) Regina Rees,” Asente said. “She was talking to accompanist Anthony Ruggiero about how she used to do the show with him in the ’90s at the Oakland Center for the Arts, how no one had done it recently and how unique and different it was.

“We kind of have the right demographics. Hers tends to skew older and ours skews younger. Combining forces with our regular players allows us to cast both the parents and children.”

The gimmick that proved so popular in “Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding” is that the audience members become the invited guests at an Italian wedding hosted by the families of Anthony Nunzio Jr. and Valentina Lynne Vitale.

The first half of the play is the wedding ceremony, and the second half is the reception, complete with a pasta dinner and wedding cake.

Audience members get to interact with the wedding party, their families, Tina’s drunken ex-boyfriend and other assorted characters.

While there is dialogue to learn and plot developments that have to happen at specific times, the show requires the actors to do a lot of improvisation with the audience.

“We actually brought in the Dinner Theatre Rejects improv troupe to run improv camps with everyone,” Asente said. “Most of the MTC folks have little to no background in improv since we mainly focus on musicals. It was totally new for us, and they had a great time learning something new, doing something new.”

The cast features Miles Assion, Daniel Chiaberta, Jenna Cintavey, Tommy DeLuca, Adam Dominick, Ben Doss, Pat Fagan, Lacey Farina, Sarahh Kinser, Courtney Martin, Tyler Moliterno, Brianna Rae Quinn, Regina Rees, John Schindell, Denise Sculli, Terry Shears, Ryan Stewart, Tyler Stouffer and Bri Wagner-Matijevic.

They also did some substantial rewriting of the original script.

“The script hasn’t been changed since the ’80s,” Asente said. “There were a lot of topical references we had to update a bit. They’re also a little dark in the script. There’s a lot of drug use, gang violence. We wanted to make it more lighthearted, more fun.

“What’s interesting is the folks who did it previously said by the time they got to show 50, very little of the script actually made it into the show. The cast had changed it so much and made it their own, they were surprised to see some of the bits that were in there.”

The show will be able to accommodate about 200 “guests” for each wedding, and because the show includes dinner, tickets must be purchased by Friday.

Based on the response so far, Asente said it sounds like this won’t be the first wedding for many in the audience.

“It’s not our typical crowd at all,” he said. “So many have said, ‘I saw this show in the ’90s and loved it so much, I’m bringing my kids, bringing my grandkids to see it.’ It’s very unique for us.”
