Westside Bowl presents Grimey Grooves showcase

YOUNGSTOWN — Brandon Martin wants to add a new spin to Grimey Grooves.

Martin, a Youngstown native who makes music as DrGoo, is relaunching the electronic music label with a showcase Friday at Westside Bowl. The show will feature acts whose music has been released by the label in the past as well as those who will be featured in the future.

The show also will serve as memorial for Brent BMV Verdinek, who started Grimey Grooves, and DJ / promoter Julian D’Amico. Both died in 2020.

“There are a lot of people who got their start on Grimey Grooves,” Martin said.

Martin, who has been releasing music through Grimey Grooves for a decade, said he was asked to take over after Verdinek’s death, and one of the changes he wants to make is to bring more diversity to its roster.

“Largely, Grimey Grooves was strictly men,” he said. “I’m trying to get a bunch of women involved. And it was only involved with releasing music. I want to highlight more live performances of DJs and bands, rappers and singers, not just producers creating electronic music.”

He also wants to expand the audience for electronic music by creating events that blend music and fashion as well as addressing some of the issues in club culture.

“A lot of it is rooted in love and peace and music, but some of it is rooted in not-so-great things like substance abuse,” Martin said. “I want to give people the tools to deal with the stress and mental anxieties they may be having, working with social workers and psychologist to come up with a plan to reach those people who are having trouble.”

While there are many outlets for electronic music in the Cleveland area, Martin said he would like to do more events in the Mahoning Valley like Friday’s showcase.

The lineup at Westside Bowl will include The Stranger, DJ Pipes, Weapon X, M8trix, Erik EV — L, Mike Niles B2B Lefty, Glockwize and DrGoo. The show starts at 8 p.m., and admission is $10.
