Holiday Concert of Giving benefits food bank

Staff report

The Youngstown Area Community Concert Band and the Stambaugh Chorus will present the 13th “Holiday Concert Of Giving” on Sunday.

Both the YACCB and Stambaugh Chorus are volunteer groups drawing from talent throughout the Mahoning Valley.

The chorus, directed by Youngstown State University Professor Hae-Jong Lee, will start the concert with a program that includes “Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas” by John Williams and “Merry Christmas, Mozart.”

The YACCB, conducted by Joseph Pellegrini, will follow, performing such pieces as “Variations On Joy To The World” and “Go Tell It On The Mountain.”

The finale will feature the two groups performing together on “Christmas Canon,” a piece adapted from Pachelbel’s Canon in D; Irving Berlin’s classic “White Christmas,” and the traditional closer, Handel’s “Hallelujah Chorus.”

The concert starts at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Stambaugh Auditorium, 1000 Fifth Ave., Youngstown. Cash and check donations will be collected to benefit Second Harvest Food Bank. No food donations will be collected at the event.

Since 2011 the concert has raised nearly $43,000 for the Second Harvest Food Bank. Both groups share the cost of the concert, so 100 percent of the money collected goes directly to the food bank.
