Spoon River’s spirits haunt Selah theater

Spirits will haunt Selah Dessert Theater for its season opening production.

“Spoon River Anthology,” adapted for the stage by Charles Aidman, is based on the book of the same name by Edgar Lee Masters. More than 50 citizens from the fictional town of Spoon River, Ill., rise from the grave, and their spirits share their life stories and the secrets that were buried with them. The graveyard denizens include teachers, lawyers, ladies of the evening, preachers, fathers and mothers, dreamers, lovers and even a gentleman buried in the wrong cemetery.

According to director Mary Ruth Lynn, these people from a different era share many of the same dreams, failures, successes, tragedies and unforeseen life experiences — all expressed through the beautiful free form poetry of Masters — that many in the audience have.

Each of the actors — Brandon Donaldson Tom O’Donnell, Samuel Perry, Susan Prosser and Dawn Rogers — play multiple characters. Musical artists Mike Miller, Bruce Spratling, Rosie Bresson and Connie Cassidy perform the traditional folk music that weaves through the stories.

Anthony Ruggiero is music director, Kevan Sullivan is assistant director and Brian Palumbo and Jeffrey Chann are production designers.

“Spoon River Anthology” will be staged at 8 p.m. Oct. 27, 28 and 29 and Nov. 4, 5, 11 and 12 at Selah Restaurant, 130 S. Bridge St., Struthers. Tickets are $19.50 and include dessert and coffee at intermission. A dinner-theater package also is available for opening night.
