Temptations’ musical comes to Cleveland

Staff report

The musical “Ain’t Too Proud — The Life and Times of The Temptations” starts a three-week engagement on Tuesday at Cleveland’s State Theatre.

The music chronicles the careers of the Motown vocal group, which had 42 top ten hits (14 reaching number one) and was voted the greatest R&B group of all time by Billboard magazine in 2017.

The show, written by Dominique Morisseau, weaves hits like “My Girl,” “Just My Imagination,” “Get Ready” and “Papa Was a Rolling Stone” into a story about how the group got its start and the personal and political conflicts that threatened to tear it apart as the United States fell into civil unrest.

“Ain’t Too Proud” opened on Broadway in 2019 and was nominated for 11 Tony Awards, winning for best choreography.

The creative team responsible for the Broadway production also worked on the tour, including Des McAnuff, director; Sergio Trujillo, choreography; Robert Brill, scenic design; Paul Tazewell, costume design; Howell Binkley, lighting design; and Steve Canyon Kennedy, sound design.

“Ain’t Too Proud” runs through July 31 at the State Theatre, 1515 Euclid Ave., Cleveland. Show times are 7:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 1 and 6:30 p.m. Sunday. Tickets range from $10 to $119 and are available online at playhousesquare.org and by calling 216-241-6000.
