Tressel joins Dana Ensemble for children’s concert Sunday

YOUNGSTOWN — Sergei Prokofiev’s “Peter & the Wolf” and Camille Saint-Saens’ “Carnival of the Animals” will be narrated by Youngstown State University President Jim Tressel at a children’s concert performed by the Dana Ensemble.

Saint-Saens’ “Carnival of the Animals” introduces a zoo of creatures large and small, while Prokofiev’s “Peter & The Wolf” tells the tale of a young boy’s adventures with a bird, a cat, a duck and the eponymous wolf.

According to Joseph W. Carucci, director of Dana School of Music, “We are privileged to have a faculty ensemble of this amazing caliber at the Dana School of Music. The musical imagery of both ‘Peter and the Wolf’ and ‘Carnival of the Animals’ are quite vivid and fun for all ages.

“The opportunity to feature President Tressel as narrator is such an honor. If anyone has ever heard the president tell a story, you know this is not a performance to be missed,” Carucci said.

The Dana Ensemble is comprised of a flexible roster of Dana School of Music faculty, often joined by regional guest artists, performing multiple times each semester for live performances in the area’s iconic performance spaces.

The concert starts at 3 p.m. Sunday at Stambaugh Auditorium, 1000 Fifth Ave., Youngstown. Tickets are $8 for adults, $7 for senior citizens and free for children 11 and younger. YSU students, faculty and staff are admitted free with a valid YSU ID. Tickets are available online at www.stambaughauditorium.com and at the door the day of the performance.
