TAG displays student art

WARREN — The works of area school children will be featured in a monthlong exhibition at Trumbull Art Gallery.

This year’s show is called “Celebrating Visual Art in Our Valley’s Schools,” and it takes a different format than in past years, according to Sue Senvissky, education chair at TAG.

“Last year, we didn’t have anything at all (due to COVID-19),” Senvissky said. “This year the students weren’t in school a lot so the teachers didn’t have as much art, so we’re having everything up for one month instead of two weeks each between Trumbull County and Warren City Schools.”

Participating school districts in Trumbull County include Warren, Niles, LaBrae, Southington, Hubbard, Bloomfield-Mespo, Liberty, Girard and Weathersfield. Most districts are displaying work by elementary and middle school students, but the Warren section also include art by Harding High School students.

This year’s show also expands into Mahoning County with the north gallery devote to pieces created by Canfield High School students.

“I’m just glad we have a chance to show the kids’ work this year,” Senvissky said. “There’s some really excellent work here.”

Art teachers from each district were responsible for picking the displayed work.

The exhibit is available to view this weekend, but the opening reception is planned from 3 to 6 p.m. April 17. The gallery also will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. that day for those who want to come earlier.

During the pandemic, TAG was requiring opening reception guests to register for a specific time so they could maintain social distancing. Senvissky said they discovered that wasn’t necessary, so opening reception attendees do not have to make reservations in advance.
