Dana students honored at NATS audition

Three Dana School of Music graduate students won awards at the fall National Association of Teachers of Singing Ohio Chapter Virtual Audition.

Sierra McCorvey of Warren, a second-year graduate student who is pursuing a master’s degree in vocal performance, placed first in the Adult Singer category.

Chase Upchurch of Titusville, Pa., a first-year graduate student pursuing a master’s degree in choral conducting, tied for second place in the Upper Musical Theater TBB (tenor, baritone and bass) Voice category.

Marlina Karimi, from West Palm Beach, Fla., earned third place in the Advanced Treble Voice category. She is a first-year graduate student pursuing a master’s degree in vocal performance.

All three students study with Dana Professor Misook Yun, who said, “Our students have worked diligently on their coursework while preparing for this audition process. Due to COVID restrictions, their challenges have included working with pre-recorded accompaniment instead of the customary live music. The faculty in the Dana School of Music are proud of their accomplishments and look forward to seeing what their future holds.”

Founded in 1944, NATS is the largest professional association of teachers of singing in the world with nearly 7,000 members in the United States, Canada and nearly 30 other countries.

More than 170 high school and college students competed from universities such as Oberlin, Cleveland Institute of Music, Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, Baldwin Wallace and Ohio State University.

Students received a certificate of achievement and an honorarium.
