Rust Belt drama ‘Working Man’ plans drive-in tour
Assorted ramblings from the world of entertainment:
l Skyway Drive-In in Leavittsburg is one of eight stops for a movie telling a story that is all too familiar to residents of the Mahoning Valley.
The makers of the drama “Working Man” organized a Made in America Drive-In tour to promote the critically acclaimed film.
Peter Gerety stars as an aging worker who loses his factory job in a Rust Belt town when the plant closes. He continues to show up for work, even after the factory closes its gates, and eventually his co-workers start to do the same in an effort to revive the defunct factory.
The movie has a 93 percent positive score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Gerety has appeared in such films as “Charlie Wilson’s War,” “Flight” and “Public Enemies,” but he also was part of two of the greatest dramas in television history — he played detective Stu Gharty on “Homicide: Life in the Streets” and had a recurring role as a judge on “The Wire.”
The cast also includes two-time Oscar nominee Talia Shire (“Rocky,” “The Godfather: Part II”) and Billy Brown (“How to Get Away with Murder,” “Sons of Anarchy”).
On the film’s website, writer-director Robert Jury says, “I grew up in the rural Midwest, so ‘Working Man’ has a lot in common with places and people I know. But it also reflects what’s currently happening and has already happened in a good chunk of working class America. It’s a story that is set in a small, Rust Belt city where financial uncertainty and the fear of factory shutdowns are the norm. It is a place where many wonder what’s happened to the world they once knew.”
Jury will accompany the film for its drive-in screening on Wednesday.
l Also coming to Skyway are contemporary Christian artists Big Daddy Weave and Zach Williams on Sept. 17.
Dove Award-winner Big Daddy Weave has had several chart-topping songs on Billboard’s Christian airplay chart, including “Redeemed,” “The Only Name (Yours Will Be),” “Alive” and “I Know.”
Williams won a Grammy Award for best contemporary Christian music album for his 2017 debut “Chain Breaker.” His follow-up album, “Rescue Story,” features the hit “There Was Jesus,” a duet with Dolly Parton.
Tickets are sold on a per-vehicle basis (up to six people) and are $175 for gold parking and $100 for GA parking, and are available at driveintheatertour.com.
In other Skyway concert news, the Carlos Jones & the P.L.U.S. Band show scheduled for Friday has been canceled.
l The popular History Channel series “American Pickers” is planning a trip to Ohio in October and is looking for leads on interesting characters with interesting items.
Hosts Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz travel the country looking for the treasures that can be found in what others consider trash.
Those who know of sites and collections that might be worth featuring on the show can call 855-OLD-RUST or email AmericanPickers@cineflix.com
Mike and Frank only pick private collections, so no stores, malls, flea markets, museums, auctions, businesses or anything open to the public will be considered.
