Jazz Day and Sax Summit set at YSU

Dana School of Music will host a Jazz Day and Saxophone Summit on Jan. 18 at Youngstown State University.

Clinics and performances are planned throughout the day with Jamey Aebersold, a saxophone player considered an authority on jazz education and improvisation. He has developed a series of Jazz Play-Alongs as well as various other supplemental aids for the development of improvisational skills. The Aebersold book and recording sets allow a musician the opportunity to practice and improvise with well-known jazz personalities at home as well as in the classroom.

YSU saxophone professor James Umble will present classical performances and solo clinics, and breakout sessions for jazz drummers, jazz bassists and keyboard players will be offered by YSU / Dana faculty.

A professional session on “Improving the Saxophone Sections in Your Bands” will be offered for music educators.

Refreshments will be provided, while music retailers will have instruments and products available.

The event runs from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Bliss Hall. Admission is free, but advance registration is requested and can be done online at ysu.edu/music /jazz-sax-summit. For more information, call 330-941-2307 or email jcumble @ysu.edu.
