Are we out of touch? Looking at you, phone book

My Sentiments Exactly

Everyone knows that some things never go out of style.

The black cocktail dress. A little red Corvette. Your mom’s homemade chocolate chip cookies.

What? Are you really telling me they AREN’T on your list of things to take with you on a deserted (or perhaps desserted, if you bring the cookies) island? Hmpf.

Anyhoo, Time magazine recently listed some top skills that may indeed last the test of time — you know, for all time. Except that they’re already fading fast. These include:

1. Reading and writing in cursive.

Apparently, it is harder to forge, activates different parts of the brain and allows people to read historical documents in their original form.

Hmm. Other than signing your name, I’m not convinced.

2. Dialing a rotary phone.

Does it matter? Probably not. I mean, when was the last time you needed to use a rotary phone for any reason at all? Right.

However, if you’ve ever watched teenagers try to make a calls with rotary phones, you know it is classic entertainment!

3. Sewing.

It seems that sewing allows you to design, create and mend clothing, and it can help build planning and math skills and hand-eye coordination.

Who knew a little needle and thread were so consequential? Whatever. I’m thinking darning socks is so 1970s, yo.

4. Navigating with a map or compass.

In the era of Google, does it really matter? Maybe, since it apparently helps build spatial reasoning skills. Not that I have those, by the way.

Moving on.

5. Remembering phone numbers.

Remember when we remembered phone numbers? OK, I’m completely deficient in this area. Not kidding.

Seriously. My long-term memory is halfway decent but short term? Hmm. Tinier than a small poodle, capisce?

6. Using a phone book.

Am I the only person on the planet who does not understand why we are slaughtering millions of innocent trees annually when the number of people in the civilized world using phone books to look up information is approximately zero? Just sayin’.

The bottom line is that certain things really have become obsolete.

Except for people loving witty humor columnists in their weekly Sunday papers.

Please do your part to keep PK gainfully employed as one of your favorite things about the very document in your hot little hands — or, if print is obsolete in your house, on your favorite screen type — for the foreseeable future!
