Plant and Pest Clinic

You can submit your questions by calling the Mahoning County office at 330-533-5538 or emailing us at mahoningclinic@osu.edu. Please attach photos and add any information that would help research your plant and pest questions. The clinic is open April through October, Monday and Thursday 9 a.m. to noon. Walk-ins are welcome.

Morning with the Masters: Vanilla

WHAT: Every home has it in the kitchen.

Everyone has tasted its wonderful flavor. But did you know vanilla is an orchid? Or that it is the only flavoring regulated by our government?

Come and enjoy the rich history of vanilla and learn how to choose the best kinds of this yummy flavor.

The presenter is Stephanie Hughes, Master Gardener volunteer.

Naturalist Series: Furbearers of Ohio

WHAT: The Naturalist Series invites subject matter experts to share their knowledge and research regarding different aspects of nature.

Topics range from animals, plants, insects and more.

Join Monika Bowman, wildlife communications specialist, and State Wildlife Officer Tom Frank with the Ohio Division of Wildlife to explore furbearers of Ohio.

We will delve into identification, wildlife history, population monitoring and the laws surrounding hunting, trapping and human-wildlife conflicts.

Wednesdays in the Garden

WHAT: Join the Trumbull County Master Gardener Volunteers for their Wednesday in the Garden program "Black Walnuts." Guests can bring their own lawn chair and join OSU Extension in the garden behind the Trumbull County Agriculture and Family Education Center.

Volunteer Open House

WHAT: The Trumbull County Master Gardener Volunteers are hosting an open house where interested gardeners can learn more about the Master Gardener Volunteer (MGV) program and how to get involved. This is a great opportunity to meet volunteers and OSU Extension staff, learn about the program, explore volunteer opportunities and determine whether the MGV program is the right fit for you. Master Gardener Volunteers support the community through educational programs and events, the horticulture help desk, the Research, Education and Demonstration Garden, and other outreach and volunteer opportunities throughout the county.

Master Gardener Volunteer training

WHAT: Gardeners accepted into the program receive 50 hours of training in vegetables, flowers, trees, shrubs, soil, insects, diseases and more.

Once they become certified Master Gardener Volunteers, they will be given the opportunity to share their gardening knowledge with others by answering questions, collaborating on service projects and presenting programs.

Classes are offered as a hybrid program, requiring both online and in-person training sessions.

WHEN: Applications will be accepted now through Dec. 4, with classes scheduled to begin in January.
