Hype up a celebration with some mimosas

Lovin' spoonful

In my family, we believe in celebrating the small things.

Got a good grade? Here’s five bucks. New job? Enjoy this bouquet of flowers and thoughtful card.

In the last five years or so, my aunt and I have taken to celebrating holiday mornings in a delicious way — with mimosas.

I’m not even sure how it started, but for years now on Christmas, Thanksgiving, the Fourth of July and so on, I’ll stop over my grandparents’ home where said aunt, who I call my Fairy Godmother, stays when she’s home for the holidays and we’ll have a nice little bubbly beverage.

About a year or so back, though, I got the bright idea to jazz these babies up. I sent her a TikTok I saw of some influencer making mimosas but using small silicone ice cube trays that create spheres.

But wait, there’s more.

We started adding fresh berries to our mimosas, too. Don’t be fooled, though.

We aren’t fancy. A coffee mug, red plastic cup, champagne flute, beer mug or whatever we find work.

And don’t worry. There’s no drinking and driving. Sometimes we opt for sparkling cider, too.

What I especially love is a mimosa when celebrating birthdays. I’m not sure why, but it works.

Recently, during a birthday celebration (not with Fairy Godmother but a special someone else), mimosas were used to wash down a homemade red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting.

Was it too much sugar? Yes. Was it worth the slight stomach ache and brief burst of energy, only to immediately crash? Also yes.

A fun thing about mimosas, like every other recipe I share, is that you can always tweak it to your liking.

I don’t really care for orange juice, but it’s good with some champagne. It’s even better when raspberries are floating in the potion. Or go add some strawberries and some basil for an earthy taste.

If I’m being honest, I also don’t like the dizzy feeling from alcohol, so grabbing something else like ginger ale is a great alternative.

As I’m writing this, I’m willing to bet it’s worth experimenting with a flavored ginger ale.

Now, if you want to be a bit fancy, squeeze your own oranges. That helps control the pulp, which I like, but I know many folks don’t.

Instead of a sugar rush, make a ton of bacon instead.

The tangy sweetness from the drink and the salt from the bacon go together well.

The next time you want a quick, fun way to celebrate someone’s success, no matter how big or small, make a mimosa and tailor it to your person.

Bonus points if you dance around the house with loud music, because life’s a dance, right?
