MILWAUKEE -- The National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum in Milwaukee unveiled the first-ever license plate bobbles.
Bobbles for all 50 states were released in honor of the 122nd anniversary of the first license plate issued in the U.S. on April 25, 1901.
According to Phil Sklar, co-founder and CEO of the museum, each bobble features the state's current license plate design on a base with two large springs that provide maximum bobbling action for the license plates.
Each state's current design is featured on each 3-inch-by-6-inch item. The bobbles for each state sell for $30 each and are expected to be shipped in August, Sklar said.
The first license plate was issued in April 1901 in New York after Gov. Benjamin Odell Jr. signed a bill into law that required motor vehicles to be registered in the Empire State. George F. Chamberlain was the first person to receive a license sticker for his vehicle. The West Coast states then followed the trend, Sklar said.
The U.S. took its lead from European nations, the Netherlands and France, which started a national database for license plates in the early 1890s.
In 1903, Massachusetts was the first state to issue actual plates. In 1928, Idaho was the first state to put a logo on the plate (the "Idaho Potato").
Today, there are more than 250 million registered vehicles in the country, and each of them has a unique license number plate in a given state.
"The license plates of all 50 states are unique in their own way and we think these license plate bobbles are the perfect way for people to celebrate their favorite states," Sklar said.
The National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum opened Feb. 1, 2019. The HOF and Museum also produces bobbleheads for organizations, individuals, and sports teams across the country.
