Extension offers spring workshops

Ohio State University Master Gardener Volunteers of Mahoning / Columbia counties will host two workshops April 22 and 29.
These workshops provide new learning opportunities for all, ranging from new gardeners to longtimers with a keen interest to learn and improve. Everyone gets time to interact with experienced Master Gardener Volunteers, presenters and other gardening enthusiasts.
Beside keynote speakers, the workshops include a choice of make-and-take projects, question-and-answer periods, handouts, choice of extension grounds teaching walkabouts and access to OSU educators and Master Gardeners, so bring questions and be prepared to get excited about the 2023 gardening season.
Master Gardener Volunteers' handmade garden art and treasures will be available for sale, and a hot buffet lunch and refreshments will be offered all day that assure you will be well-fed and entertained.
Finally, before you leave, lucky participants will be awarded door prizes, including plants, garden treasures and coupons including the complete cost to attend several other valuable future events.
Both workshops commence promptly at 9 a.m. at the OSU Extension Office, 490 Broad St., Canfield. The office is across the street from the Canfield Fairgrounds.
Reservations are limited and participants choose between optional sessions at the time of reservations. Please make your reservation early.
• The April 22 morning keynote speaker will be Eric Barrett, extension educator in Mahoning County. His topic will be "Creating Outdoor Rooms with Plants." Barrett will help provide the insights you need to create that special space around your house that you will so much love throughout the warm weather months.
The April 22 afternoon keynote speaker will be Tom deHaas, extension educator in Erie County. He will discuss "Best Evergreens for your Landscape," explaining that there are more evergreen shrubs than you can ever imagine. He will help participants go beyond the basics and enable them to choose the right kinds and right locations to keep their landscapes interesting throughout the year.
• The April 29 morning keynote speaker will be Pam Bennett, OSU Extension State Master Gardener Volunteer program director and professor. Bennett will address the "New, Plus Tried and True in the Perennial World," enabling participants to plant the perennials that add the most beauty to their gardens and creating the best garden in their neighborhoods.
The April 29 afternoon keynote speaker will be Laura Deeter, horticultural science and landscape professor at the Agriculture Technical Institute at Ohio State University. Deeter's topic, "Captivating Containers," will help participants take containers to infinity and beyond using exciting, unusual, fun and overall fantastic plants.
