Erbe’s ‘Transcendence’ opens
The Butler Institute of American Art will display the first major solo exhibition by Chantell Van Erbe, but the artist’s last name should be familiar to regular visitors to the museum.
She is the daughter of New Jersey artist Gary Erbe, whose realist paintings are part of the Butler’s permanent collection and who has had three solo exhibitions in Youngstown.
“The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree,” said Butler Executive Director Louis A. Zona.
“Transcendence” features 28 mixed media works by Erbe, whose pieces include ink and colored pencil.
“It’s different from her father,” Zona said. “There’s a certain graphic art quality to her work. That’s not a negative; that’s a positive. It shows a lot of discipline, which she surely picked up from her father. There’s never a shortcut. The way I feel about her work is she’s the complete package. She’s very talented, and the work shows it.”
Her work is described as featuring a freshness of vision, a raw energy and an immediacy of place while bridging the trends of 21st century modernism and the new realism movement.
According to the artist, she creates not the reality she sees, but the reality that she remembers, giving her work a dream-like quality.
Erbe is the winner of several awards and a member of the Allied Artists of America and the Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club. She is listed in Who’s Who in American Art, and her work will be featured in a book devoted to New Jersey artists by Tova Navarra.
“Transcendence” will be on display through Oct. 20, and she will attend a meet-the-artist reception from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday.
“Her work will be perfect for the Mesaros Gallery,” Zona said. “It’s an intimate space, and her work is not large.”
