YSU Theatre stages mystery-comedy

By Staff report 2 min read

The Gothic mystery comedy "Ravenscroft" opens Friday at Youngstown State University.

The play is set in a remote manor where a police inspector arrives after a mysterious death. She finds herself surrounded by five women, each with a compelling motive and wildly different accounts of what actually happened. With disguises, comic misdirection and multiple plot twists, "Ravenscroft" is a theatrical puzzle box that rewards close attention -- and a sense of humor.

This production celebrates the legacy of prolific playwright Don Joseph Nigro (1949-2026), a Canton native who wrote more than 500 plays across genres, from surreal comedies to intricate mysteries.

"Ravenscroft," part of Nigro's acclaimed Inspector Ruffing series, was adapted into the film "The Manor," starring Peter O’Toole.

Senior lecturer Todd Dicken directs a cast featuring Merrill Voytko, Austintown; Alex Shina, Cuyahoga Falls; Samantha Cox. Niles; Chloe Camacho, Bristolville; Helena Snyder, Austintown; Regina Escarcega, Mexico City, Mexico; and Karianne Rateno, Concord Township.

"Ravenscroft" will be staged at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday through Oct. 11 in Bliss Hall's Spotlight Theater. Tickets are $18 for adults, $14 for senior citizens and non-YSU students, $10 for YSU faculty and staff, $7 for children ages 18 and younger and free for YSU students.
