JCC remembers Houdini with movie, magician

Today is the deadline to register for a program on Sunday at the Jewish Community Center of Youngstown, 505 Gypsy Lane, commemorating the 100th anniversary of Harry Houdini's death.

It will start at 4:30 p.m. with a documentary on the life of the escape artist and illusionist followed by a performance by magician and mentalist Steve Haberman.

Doors open at 4 p.m. Attendees can register at jccyoungstown.org/filmseries, and admission is a "pay what you can" model with suggested tiers of $5, $18 and $36.

Arts, crafts show planned by Old Erie Lodge #3

Old Erie Lodge #3 will have a Craft & Artisan Show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Warren Masonic Temple, 112 Pine Ave. NE.

Participating vendors will offer a varied mix of handmade and specialty goods, including jewelry, rocks and minerals, fossils, aromatherapy products, handmade soap, engraving, lighted scenes, baked goods, crochet items, dog treats, dipping sauces and additional artisan work.

Admission is free with donations accepted. The lodge is working toward making the Warren Masonic Temple a more active and welcoming part of the surrounding community, and substantial renovations have been completed since 2020.

Friendly Squares plan Halloween dance

The Friendly Squares monthly dance will have a Halloween theme.

Neil Harnar will be the caller for the square dance. Costumes are encouraged but not required, and the refreshment committee will serve cider and donuts.

The dance runs from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Saturday at Niles SCOPE Center, 14 E. State St. A $7 donation is requested at the door. For more information, call 330-506-0272.

Neon Moon Spectacular debuts in downtown Sharon

Downtown Sharon, Pa., will have its first Neon Moon Spooktacular from 3 to 9 p.m. Saturday along the Shenango River.

The free event is designed to bring people to the riverfront while creating an opportunity for families to have fun, discover local businesses/organizations, and connect with their community.

It will include a night market, haunted food court, spooky kids zone, pumpkin-carving contest, live entertainment, the unveiling of a new art installation by Random Acts of Artists and a River of Light Show on the Shenango River at 7:30 p.m.

Art show opens at Davis Family YMCA

The annual But I Know What I Like Art Show opens Sunday at the Davis Family YMCA, 45 McClurg Road, Boardman.

It features 158 works by 78 local artists. The twist is that the show is always judged by lay people, as in “I don’t know much about art, but I know what I like.”

The work will be on display through Nov. 8, and an opening reception and awards ceremony is scheduled from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Sunday. For more information, go to ymcayo.org/arts-humanities/ or call 330-480-5656.

TAG displays Taneri for October

The work of Gary Taneri is featured in the Artist of the Month Gallery for October at Trumbull Art Gallery, 158 N. Park Ave., Warren.

His work includes portraiture, taken from his own photographs, old family photos or images found online. His abstract paintings usually begin as landscapes or interior spaces, and their development is based on color and compositional choices.

Gallery hours are noon to 4 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Admission is free.

Labor museum hosts military history program

Youngstown Historical Center of Industry and Labor, 151 W. Wood St., will host the first program in a four-part lecture series on "Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Military History."

Martha Pallante will moderate a panel discussion on "Conquest, Memory, and Indigenous Resistance" featuring Luke Hardy, Matt O'Mansky and David Simonelli.

YSU Theatre offers open house

University Theatre at Youngstown State University invites prospective students and their families to attend an open house from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bliss Hall.

During “Theatre for a Day,” high school students can observe acting techniques, try their hand in scene workshops, participate in ensemble activities, connect with current students and explore specialized training opportunities that match their artistic interests.

There is no fee to attend, but advance registration is required at ysu.edu/music-theatre-OH.

Boardman orchestras play pops concert

Boardman High School ensembles will play a pops concert at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Boardman Performing Arts Center, 7777 Glenwood Ave.

The concert will feature the school's Classical Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra and Symphony Orchestra playing classical and pops pieces as well as a sneak preview of Boardman's rock orchestra, Project Mayhem.

Admission is $3 for adults, $2 for students and free for senior citizens and children ages 10 and younger.

McGuffey series presents archaeological society speaker

A founding member of the Mahoning County Archaeological Society will be the next speaker for the William Holmes McGuffey Historical Society's Memories of a Lifetime Speakers Series.

Paleo Indians (13000 B.C. to 7000 B.C.), descended from humans that crossed the Bering Strait, and there is evidence of these inhabitants in Ohio. John Chuey will talk about the prehistory of Ohio, using artifacts and detailing what they represent.

The program starts at 10 a.m. Oct. 17 at Denny's meeting room, 4020 Belmont Ave., Liberty. Admission is $10 for McGuffey members and $15 for non-members. Reservations are suggested and can be made by calling 330-726-8277.

Playhouse announces 'Spelling Bee' auditions

Auditions are scheduled from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 22 and 23 for the musical "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" at Youngstown Playhouse, 600 Playhouse Lane.

Director Connor Bezeredi is seeking a cast of nine actors/singers ages 16 and older who are comfortable with improvisation and audience interaction. Performers should prepare 32 bars of a musical theater song in the style of the show but not from "Spelling Bee."
